MUSICAL MASTERPIECES

I know there's loads of bands out there who, despite releasing stunning single after stunning single, never got the recognition due to them from the record buying public.

But there can't be many bigger disgraces than the failure of the first couple of singles from The Monochrome Set that were put on Rough Trade Records back in 1979 and 1980:-

mp3 : The Monochrome Set - He's Frank
mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Eine Symphonie Des Grauens

Listen and weep that these 150 second-long bits of perfection didn't get the band on Top of The Pops.

I have that very Single, so it wasn't my fault.

Brilliant. Apparently, they've reformed for a brief bit and are touring, or recently toured. Anyway, great post. Not sure why they didn't hit it much bigger, either - too quirky and literate, perhaps, much like The Jazz Butcher.

I can tell you there are 3 people in NYC as well as myself in Tampa, FL that own everything The Monochrome Set did.

You're right Dave about the touring bit.....caught them in 2012. My sidekick did a very fine review:-

Wonderful stuff, I still can't seem to let a month go by without listening to Alphaville. Punk trivia for scoring points when pissed in the pub: did you know that the Monochrome's drummer JD Haney is the brother of Joy de Vivre, ex-singer in Crass? Oh alright, I'll get the pints in, then ...

cheers, Dave Sez.
