A WEE ODDITY STUCK AWAY ON THE B-SIDE
mp3 : Pavement - Cut Your Hair
This, from recollection, was the first Pavement song I ever heard. It would have come on the radio one night probably on something like The Evening Session with Steve Lamaq and Jo Whiley. I remember thinking that the fuss being made about them in the music press might well be worth it.
Released in February 1994, It just about made the UK Top 50 but was a reasonable sized hit over in the USA. I've never actually owned the single until about a couple of months back. 25p for the CD in a charity shop. That's a wee bargain in my book. Here's your b-sides:-
mp3 : Pavement - Camera
mp3 : Pavement - Stare
While Stare is a largely undistinguished Pavement by number sort of track, there should be a real bit of interest in Camera. There's no credits given on the CD single for any of the three tracks, but have a listen and you'll recognise it as the same tune as the R.E.M. song Camera which you'll find on the 1984 LP Reckoning...albeit the Pavement lyrics are totally different. Given Pavement were said by many to be the new R.E.M. this was a very brave move.....

Although I've long liked Pavement, I've never loved them. I adored REM though. I've always thought Pavement's take on 'Camera' was an abomination and although I've mellowed a little, I remain rather irked by it.
I'm no purest in any sense, but to me it really sounded like they couldn't give a shit whether they wanted to play the song or not and just gave up on it completely half way through. It's such a lovely song and deserves to be shown a bit more respect IMO.
Though it is just as likely that I simply 'don't get it' and I've missed the point entirely.
