YUP, HE CAN BE AN ANNOYING LITTLE RUNT...

.........but you can't deny that he's helped make some fine music over the years.

I couldn't believe it when I read somewhere the other day that it's now 10 years since Pete Doherty first came to prominence when The Libertines became bona-fide popstars. The first thing I ever heard by them remains one of my favourite singles of the noughties:-

mp3 : The Libertines - Up The Bracket

In the same way that bands like The Jam meant the world to me when I was a teenager, I can easily understand why years later so many would fall under the spell of The Libertines. They looked and sounded a cut above most bands of that era and they had a frontman who was incredibly charismatic.

And for those who thought Doherty was just a pretty-boy with a drugs problem, I offer up as evidence this fantastic ballad from 2004:-

mp3 : Wolfman featuring Peter Doherty - For Lovers

Sadly, I don't think he's come up with anything that classy since then - I was left a wee bit disappointed in the second LP by The Libertines and the best I can say about Babyshambles is that the stuff has been patchy, although this one does always bring a wee smile to my face:-

mp3 : Babyshambles - Killamangiro  (single version)

Just a pity that the drugs appear to have fucked him up somewhat as a human being.

Jim,

I was just thinking about PD recently & without making any comments on his lifestyle & choices I have to say he is a fantastic talent & not just a product of hype that some people would have you believe I struggle to think of a song that I like more right now than Albion just brillant ! & as for Can't stop me now what an anthem for the youth it just shouts rebellion & anarchy if it was only around when we were young i am sure we would be screaming it out as loud as we could.

Responsible for my favourite lyric of 21st Century

There are fewer more distressing sights than that of an Englishman in a baseball cap.

i often quote those lyrics too... they make me smile...

unfortunately it has become almost as distressing to see an englishman in a trilby hat...

'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' is, for me, one of the singles of the decade, a rare touch of genius. There were one or two other Libertines tracks that are worthy of a B or C+, but aside from that, I find the man rather odious and a waste of fresh air.

Like The Robster said: In his best moments Pete Doherty had a touch of genius. 'For lovers' and 'Fuck forever' are one of the best songs of the last ten years. I hope he won't end like Amy
