TWO GREAT SINGLES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
The majestic noise made by Win on the June 1985 single You've Got The Power didn't generate any chart success. But it was a song that became more widely known months after its release thanks to it soundtracking a very peculiar advert for a rather vile brand of Scottish lager.
When Win moved across to London Records after Swamplands had come to an inglorious end, the powers that be at the label, having been left bemused by the failure of previous 45 Shampoo Tears to trouble the charts, decided that the follow-up 45 should have an enticement. And so when they got round to issuing Super Popoid Groove in March 1987, they decided it would be as a 2-record gate fold pack featuring copies of You've Got The Power, complete with Swamplands logo and catalogue number.
mp3 : Win - Super Popoid Groove
mp3 : Win - Baby Cutting
mp3 : Win - You've Got The Power
mp3 : Win - In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)
It helped the single reach #63. I'm sure everyone was gutted. Super Popoid Groove itself was a single that deserved to get the band on Top of The Pops. It must have been painful to realise that you couldn't;t even give away copies of the old 45.
Chewing gum baby for the ears.
Happy Listening.

JC Been waiting for this to appear for some time , I quite like the vile lager you speak of and perhaps someone could confirm this one for me I recall having the shampoo tears single & if I remember correctly it came with sachets of Win shampoo am I correct or is this a figment of my ever increasing imagination ?
Son of the rock
Near perfect 80s Pop.
I know i should really like Win .. I've tried I've really tried but it just cant get it
Yep, you got the shampoo with Shampoo Tears. My pal bought it on 12".
I saw their back catalogue, including the double-pack 12" and various versions of singles + the album in the window of a charity shop in Saltcoats a year or so ago. Total cost, a fiver. With no money on me I nipped across the road to the cash machine and walked hurriedly back just in time to see the old woman remove them from the window and sell them to this rather greasy haired auld guy in a dark blue parka. Was it anyone on here? Bastard!
Good morning, all! Forget to comment last time these fine tunes were posted. 'Super Popoid Groove' has 'drops' in it throughout. Shame. Win were a perfect pop/indie band. I used to have a sampler tape I got through Record Mirror, and 'You've Got The Power' was on it. Brilliant stuff. I also had 'Uh...Baby Tears' on a pre-recorded cassette (the days before CD's really kicked in). Must see if that's been reissued on CD. Excellent, excellent stuff.
Sorry folks....I thought it was a clean copy of the single. Will rectify at some point.
The LP did come out on CD but isn't the easiest to track down. I will sort out some mp3s of the LP soon.
JC,
you're needing some of that WIN shampoo for your 'greasy hair' and are you still wearing that auld dark blue parka ?????
