SIX DAYS IN TO 2012....AND NOTHING BY THE SMITHS??

TVV had a long running series in 2010/11 in which, every Saturday, one song by The Smiths would feature.  I stopped after Part 50 back in August 2011 as I was bored with it and judging from the lack of comments felt most readers were too.

This really should have been featured before now:-

mp3 : The Smiths - I Started Something I Couldn't Finish

I have to say that I've no idea what 2012 holds for this blog.  Sometimes I'm filled with enthusiasm and at other times I'm bored rigid.  I'm grateful to occasional correspondent Mr John Greer for digging me out of the occasional hole when I can't think of anything meaningful to say, but he's away on holiday just now and so there's nothing pending in the in-tray from him.

I'm actually OK just now...I've a few ideas for postings in mind and I'm also quite content to go back and re-post some of the old stuff.  But it is quite tough going to think you've something meaningful to say after nearly 1800 posts and gawd only knows how many mps (going by 4 per post - which is probably an underestimate - that gives you over 7000!!!). And I don't want to go down the road of simply posting an mp3 with the artwork from the single or LP.

A few of the bloggers who were around when I began have packed up their tents and headed to the more fashionable Facebook and Twitter.  I'm on the former thanks to the need to keep up with news from some of my favourite singers and bands but I don't go near the latter.  I'm an old-fashioned boy set in my ways.

So don't come here in 2012 expecting too much in the way of new and emerging music.  There will be some, but not much, of that genre.  It's going to be the same-old, same-old with music from the dim and distant past prevailing for the most part.  Oh and the Saturday series for Scottish singles is coming back tomorrow.  And hopefully Comrade Colin will soon be back on the trail telling us all the amazing story of Sarah Records.

This song also somehow seems apt today:-

mp3 : Wake The President - You Can't Change That Boy

Happy Listening

You forget that the same-old, same-old with music from the dim and distant past is generally a good thing. Which is my way of saying, please don't forsake the blog! Cheers.

This blog is important. Do carry on. But after 2,700 posts myself, I do understand why it can feel a grind.

Sorry folks if I caused a panic!!

TVV is not disappearing....but there might be times it goes off-air for a few days cos I can't find any inspiration whereas I've always tried to ensure post per day in the past.

January is actually beginning to shape up quite well in terms of the nonsense about to be written....

If you're ever short of an article, tap me up. I'm happy to contribute anytime, but don't want to force my musings down yer throat.

If you think you have nonsense to write, just wait 'til you see what I'm capable of...

Fear not my good man.
Nobody expects the Scottish Inquisition!

Put yer feet up and pay attention to your trussocks from time to time.

Even Samuel Pepys had his olde blog down-days. Randy drunken bugger missed many a day's diary entry.

The Great Fire Of London was the best thing that happened to him ideas-wise. You could say it re-lit both Pudding Lane and his mojo. He'd previously been aimlessly pushing his quill around pining for a dusky moll.

I for one look forward to your old-fashioned dim and distant Caledonian meanderings.

Besides, we all look down the big deep hole now and again. Just occasionally, we spot the sparkle of a golden nugget - and all is well with the world again.

Love and respect old lad.

Aye, what they all said! Don't pressurise yourself to post each and every day. I blog when the muse strikes. I used to be obsesed by falling visitor numbers and the likes and blamed it on not posting more regularly but I tell myself that if I post something I'm genuinely interested in, that gets across to the readers and they come back. Also, Google is your friend. I find my own posts pop up on Google fairly frequently when I'm searching for other things. Old things that had been forgotten about are still being discovered for the first time by some wide-eyed trainspotter in Peru or New Zealand or wherever. Blogging's great, isn't it?

I do miss the new stuff to be honest.

It's funny that when we both started we mixed new and old stuff but that we've pretty much gone in opposite directions since roughly year 2.

Maybe you just need to get enthused by something new - I know over past decades ;-) I've gone through phases when it's hard to find new stuff to excite me and if the blog hadn't introduced me to so much, it would have withered long before now.

And just to illustrate the opposite directions, I think Twitter is a great way of keeping in touch with stuff, particularly with the up and coming stuff but not exclusively.

Having said that, for me, it's not often got beyond plugging posts as a way of expressing myself. I'm not a fan of the 'I just had a curry for tea' school of Twitter.

However I'm quite proud of the fact that I caused Gordon Ballboy to involuntary shudder a few weeks ago!

Keep up the good work. Same old same old is good enough for me to continue to lurk here. I have you to thank for introducing me to marvelous Butcher Boy when you posted Carve a pattern here in Spring 2009. If you need ideas how about Billy Mac's version of Boys keep swinging to celebrate Bowie's 65th on Sunday perhaps?, or Lee Marvin's Wandrin Star (for no other reason than it's my guilty pleasure to ding it in the bath). Best wishes for 2012

When I say "ding" I mean sing. Settle down there at the back.

JC, any communique's from Villian Towers/Mansions/Estate are read with interest and sometimes a really good chuckle. Here's to more in 2012!
PS: I'm with @BobbyJ, the Edwyn Collins series should be a really fun one.
