5 YEARS OLD TODAY.....

.....and you're all invited to come along to my party which is being held in the building pictured above!!!

Some men when they hit middle-age and worry about growing old buy a fast car or a speedboat.  Or at the very least take up membership of an expensive gymnasium.  Me??  I started a music blog......

And here we are, 5 years to the day and some 1700 posts later (and that must somewhere in the region of 7000 songs!!!) still battering out the same tired old cliches.  Loads of folk to thank for me getting here......but hopefully you know who you are and won't mind that I don't list any names......

I had a great post planned for today....but it's going to have to wait a wee while as something else I reckon is a bit more worthy.....namely the fact that I am, kind of, really throwing a 5th Birthday party in the building up at the top of this posting.

The truth of the matter is that to mark the 5th Birthday I wanted to do mark the occasion with a special event but wasn't sure if I could pull if off.  Taking inspiration from fellow Scottish-based bloggers like Matthew (Song By Toad) Ed (17 Seconds), Mike (Manic Pop Thrills), Lloyd (Peenko) and Jim (Aye Tunes) who have all either started up record labels or promoted gigs, I got my finger out......and thanks to the help of the wonderful collective known as Butcher Boy, I'm now arranging and promoting a gig that they are headlining!!

The date is Saturday 19 November and the venue is the Langside Halls on the south side of Glasgow, running from 7.30 - 10.30pm and Butcher Boy will play their first hometown gig since the release of Helping Hands a few months back

I'll be adding a support act in due course and I've also arranged for the bar (with very reasonable prices) to be open as well.   The cost of each ticket is £8 plus an 80p booking fee. It will be fully seated and I've made 150 tickets available via this link:-

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/137188

I don't know what possessed me to go ahead with this venture as everyone I know who goes down the gig promotion trail tells me it's a nightmare....but fun if successfully pulled off.

So it's fingers crossed.

The band have been hugely helpful in all of this and I really am grateful to them for agreeing to perform.  All I need now is 150 folk to come along and show their appreciation.....

mp3 : Butcher Boy - Keep Your Powder Dry
mp3 : Butcher Boy - Why I Like Babies
mp3 : Butcher Boy - The Day Our Voices Broke

That's one track from each of their three superb LPs.

Oh one thing I meant to mention......

The way I've organised the tickets is via an on-line service that you pay by card and get an email confirming you can come along.  In a wee twist to the usual, anyone coming along will receive a ticket as they come through the door as a souvenir....something like a specially designed postcard.  But I'm still working on that....in the meantime I've a sound man to worry about, the rider for the band, finding that elusive and appropriate support act and sleepless nights that enough folk will come long.

As for that pre-planned and appropriate posting scheduled for today.....well please tune in early next week when all will be revealed.  In the meantime, here, once again are all the songs that I ever featured on TVV in the first 10 postings covering Friday 30 September  - Wednesday 11 October 2006

mp3 : James - Fire Away (extended version)
mp3 : Lloyd Cole - Butterfly (The Planet Ann Charlotte Mix)
mp3 : Hey! Elastica - Eat Your Heart Out (12" version)
mp3 : A House - Endless Art
mp3 : A House - More Endless Art
mp3 : David Kitt - Me And My Love
mp3 : Julian Cope - Bagged-Out Ken
mp3 : The Triffids - Rent
mp3 : Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine - Rent
mp3 : The Jam - When You're Young
mp3 : The Jam - Smithers Jones
mp3 : Albert Hammond Jnr - Hard To Live In The City
mp3 : Half Man Half Biscuit - Albert Hammond Bootleg
mp3 : The Beta Band - Dry The Rain
mp3 : Billy Bragg - Greetings To The New Brunette
mp3 : Arab Strap - Afterwards
mp3 : The Pale Fountains - Thank You

It somehow seems appropriate to stop there.......Top 20 tunes to turn you on today.

I'm going to take a wee break for a few days....back on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY my friend and all the VERY best from Sexyloserland!!

The gig obviously is a neat idea indeed and I'm absolutely sure the only trouble you will be facing is that you'll find out that 150 tickets are by far not enough: you'd better place a big bouncer at the door, that's for sure!

I only wish I could be there, but I'm afraid it would take things too far to fly in for a gig all the way from Germany ... then again: who knows?

So thanks for all the brilliant songs you gave to us within the last five years: I just hope you'll continue in similar form for quite some time to come!!

Bloody hell Jim that's celebrating and a half and good on you for 'going physical' with such ambition and verve. Huge congrats on 5 glorious years of tireless blogging - you have a workrate that puts the rest of us to shame - Dx (5 years old next week too - massive gig venue still unbooked).

Sadly, Mrs. Rol has plans for us the weekend of your party, but I'll be there in spirit. Hope you have an excellent night.

Thanks for everything.

Jeez .... now I really contemplating: searched the whole morning for cheap flights + hotels and I think I could make it there and back for Euro 150,- ... that's without having a few drinks with you all at the venue, taking those into account it will most probably turn out to be 300,- in total. Hmmmh .... wonder what Mrs Loser will say when I get home from work later today ... "Bugger Off!", I'm willing to have a small bet!!

Dirk....

It would be fantastic to see you, but you should save your money for another trip which can be better planned.

What I havent said in the posting is that the following morning....very early the folloing morning at 6am.....I'm on a flight from Glasgow Airport to head out on holiday. So although it's my party I don't think I will be doing all that much drinking and revelling!!!!

Find a weekend when there is a cheaper flight to Glasgow and you can come over and be the guest at Villain Towers. I'm sure we can find a great night out at a gig.

Hmmm ... 6am means you gotta be at the airport at 4am, one hour for packing things and getting there ... means we could just party until 3am.

Nope, that isn't worth the effort, I'd say.

Another weekend might really be the better choice! Perhaps we can still convince some other bloggers to join us then ... the usual suspects ... you know whom I mean.

Ah, and thanks for the invitation anyway: most appreciated, of course, I should warn you though that I snore like mad when having drunk too much. Gave up vomiting though ...

Happy Birthday JC.....Best blog on the net bar none. I swing by every day from Perth, Western Australia.....happy to see the wonderful Perth band The Triffids featured amongst your first 10 blogs. I used to see them when I was an impressionable young university student half a lifetime ago.....ah memories.

All the best.....hope the gig goes well.

Congratulations and happy birthday, I have a weeks holiday the week of your gig and it's my birthday that week too, so there's a wee present for me if I can persuade Lisa to look after the boys for a couple of days! Your blog is one I visit most days and nearly always find something, may it be stuff I've forgotten or something new, and for that I say cheers.

The Sir Edmund Hilary of bloggers. And not a Sherpa in sight.
I could kick the arse out of the reaching new peaks and looking down on the rest metaphor, but I won't hang around. (Chiefly as I've just had back surgery this week and can't sit down for more that 5 minutes).

If there was a Knighthood for Bloggers, you'd be a er, Dame or something.

Or more importantly, a Player's Player Of The Year.

Righto, gotta stand up and find the coedine and whiskey.

Love you more than a Tunnocks Wafer.

Happy Birthday to TVV.

Jim, you know what an inspiration you have been to me. The first and best music blog I ever happened upon. I've learned so much about music and life from you. Very much treasured.

I would be over in November in a heartbeat, if I could. xxTricia

My plea for the 5 next years : please stop with the losers and the awful ones ( McKenzie, Richman, the embarrassing Sarah Records series ), this blog declines. Thank you ;-)

Jacques the Kipper said...

Hey, Anonymous - one person's loser is many another's winner. Nothing to stop you sharing some of your faves elsewhere on the web if you feel so strongly.

I've known JC for a good few years now and while our taste may be broadly similar, there are many musical things we disagree on.

His strength, exhibited through this blog, is his passion for certain artists, willingness to give stuff he's less enthused about a listen and share stuff he personally doesn't like because maybe you will.

To 5 more years of musical debate.

I discovered TVV a couple of years "late" but I've been a regular visitor since.

The music is always worth a listen and a joy to discover tunes I'd read about but never actually heard.

Speaking of which, it's not just about the music but your love of music, which resonates through the accompanying prose.

Happy birthday to a labour of love and a top website!
