ONE SONG BY THE SMITHS....A SERIES FOR SATURDAYS (Part 46)

Elvis meets Morrissey and Marr at a Manchester funfair:-

mp3 : The Smiths - Rusholme Ruffians

Neither of them ever denied it was something that stole/borrowed from (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame - indeed when it came to live performances, the intro was from the rockabilly hit.

But for something that is not entirely original, it remains one of the best songs in the entire back catalogue, thanks in the main to the lyrical soap opera.

A very early version of Rusholme Ruffians was recorded for a John Peel session in August 1984 and many years later released as a b-side:-

mp3 : The Smiths - Rusholme Ruffians (Peel Session)

And here's the inspiration.......

Happy Listening.

Thanks for this track...
To me Meat is Murder remains one of the best Smiths' album.

It is apart from the other Smiths' records. I like the Rockabilly influence.

Yes. It's influenced by her song "Fourteen Again".

You like that musical parody and dislike "Ask" ? Again i really don't understand. If there was only bad music as "Rusholme Ruffians" the Smiths would have been just another old school rock'n'roll. Thanks the musical gods, some music composed by Marr was much better/intersting/original than this piece of poor rockabilly stuff.

A glance through all the postings in this series and elsewhere on the blog will show how highly I regard Johnny Marr's work.

It is of course all about opinions, but I dont regard 'Ask' as one of his better moments....
