A SET OF REMIXES TOO FAR FOR THIS FAN....

12 x 12 is the title of a series of  12-inch singles released by New Order  in February 2006 through a label called New State Recordings. The discs contain a mixture of both new and previously released remixes of   songs.

I didn't even try to seek them out at the time.  In fact I had forgotten all about them until I stumbled upon this in a second-hand shop a few weeks back:-

mp3 : New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (Richard X Extended Remix)
mp3 : New Order - Jetstream (Arthur Baker remix)
mp3 : New Order - Shellshock (John Robie remix)
mp3 : New Order - Thieves Like Us (12" extended mix)

Even though I only paid £2 for the disc, I still felt a bit cheated.  The versions of Shellshock and Thieves Like us were no different from those released back in the mid 80s and I already had the originals on 12" singles. What made it words was that the sound quality on the 2006 disc was was way inferior to the originals.   Jetstream is an appalling song....I really hoped that Arthur Baker would do something special with it....perhaps turn into something akin to Confusion on which he had previously worked with the band. Sadly no....

To be fair, the mix of Bizarre Love Triangle is a bit different from others in the collection, but it is still inferior to the original.  Still.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Here's a link to a live clip from 2008.  I'm somewhere in the audience......

Happy Listening.

I abhor mixes or remixes. They sounded the death knell for decent rock music and allowed MORE people with very little imagination to creep into the musical woodwork.

I remember hearing Arthur Baker's 1st mix of a Springsteen track. It was absolutely dire. I wanted to hunt him down and rip his head off ASAP.

"Mix" or "Remix" usually means: "turn up the drums and treble and do some tape loops - those losers will buy any dross their fave band's name's on."

Kill them all sez I!

New Order have long been a cash cow for whatever record company that seems to hold any rights to their songs.

I blame Hooky...

Personally part of the reason I love New Order IS the remixes. My first purchase was Substance on double CD and I was addicted... True there have been some shockers along the way, but also some stunning remixes (Run2, True Faith, Evil Dust, Touched, BLT, even Ruined in a Day and Here to stay). FUck I need to go dig these out now.

Good grief. Can't beleive we're still arguing aobut the vlaue of remixes. Some are rubbish, some are good and some are great. Much like any other form of music.

Look at most of Weatherall's early remixes for example.

Well said, Ted. There's been some great NO remixes IMO.

Actually, I can't believe how bad my spelling/typing has become.
