Two years ago I found myself in similar circumstances to JC when I lost one of my closest childhood friends to cancer. It was early April 2009 and she died just eighteen days after I had given birth to my second child. I was on the round-the-clock nursing mother schedule and I can remember so clearly all those long nighttime hours - just me, my beautiful baby and my overwhelming grief. I listened to the Vetiver album Tight Knit over and over again through those nights. I’ve sat here at the keyboard groping for the words to describe how that album steadied me and what it meant but I can’t find them. It’s still too close, I guess. But I imagine anyone reading this, anyone who seeks out the blogs for their songs and their stories about the songs, will understand anyway.
It was really the entire album and I had to play it a certain way. I always started out with More of This because I needed that shot of pure pop sunniness before I could go on. Our love is more than enough to calm my troubled mind.
mp3: Vetiver - More of This
And then before I would go back and play the album straight through from track one, I played Through the Front Door, which probably sums it all up: quiet and final and achingly lovely. Won’t be back again.

JC, you brighten up my world in so many ways through your blog and your friendship. My deepest sympathy to you and your family and friends.
