HAPPINESS AND SADNESS: ALL MY LIFE

Songs are the nearest we have to magic spells. Biochemists can explain that hearing a song releases chemicals in the brain that trigger the same emotions you felt when your first heard that song. The best and most powerful songs evoke genuine time travel. Some are so strong that they can only be used sparely. For me, I always associate Evan Dando's All My Life with the death of my brother. The pain of immediate loss is unbearable - someone really does grab your heart and rip it through your mouth. But pain is something we are programmed to forget as humans. When I hear this song, it ends the forgetting. On the other side, I am always left with the joy that I am alive and that I now know the things I want and need are the things that matter.

It's an old tale. What would life be without death. And doesn't death make life worth living. And loving.

Cheers!
