A mate of mine at University thought that the lyrics penned and sung by Ian McCulloch in mid 80s Echo & The Bunnymen were both hugely profound and philosophical to the point that he tried to incorporate whole chunks of them in various essays.I wonder what he thinks of the 'poetry' nowadays:-
I'm on the chopping block
Chopping off my stopping thoughts
Self doubt and selfism
Were the cheapest things
I ever bought
When you say it's love
D'you mean the back of love
We`re taken advantage of
Breaking the back of love
We`re taking advantage of
Breaking the back of love
Easier said than done you said
But it`s more difficult to say
With eyes bigger than our bellies
We want to
But we can't look away
What were you thinking of
When you dreamt that up
What were you thinking of
When you dreamt that up
When you're surrounded by
a simple chain of events
Eventually
You'll shack those shackles off
We can't tell our left from right
But we know we love extremes
Getting to grips with the ups and downs
Because there's nothing in between
When you say that's love
D'you mean the back of love
When you say it's love
D'you mean the back of love?
We're taken advantage of
Breaking the back of love
We're taking advantage of
Breaking the back of love
What were you thinking of
When you dreamt that up
We're taking advantage of
We're breaking the back of love
Breaking the back of love
No matter the lyrical nonsense, there's no denying that it's a cracker of a tune that has proven quite timeless. Its still as fresh and dynamic today almost 29 years after it was first released.
mp3 : Echo & The Bunnymen - The Back Of Love
It gave the band their first mainstream chart success, reaching #19 in May 1982. Here's the two excellent songs that featured on the 12" version of the single:-
mp3 : Echo & The Bunnymen - The Subject
mp3 : Echo & The Bunnymen - Fuel
Incidentally, the painting on the sleeve is by the 19th Century British artist Henry Scott Tuke. The painting is called The Promise, which is not too dissimilar to that of the band's previous single.......
Here's footage of a very interesting appearance on Top Of The Pops:-
Shoulder-shaking on stilts......now that's impressive!!!

One of my all time favourite bands, with one of my all time favourite tracks but took me aback slightly after reading " almost 29 years after it was first released." All the girls I knew wanted to sleep with Mac, as did half the boys!!! Now where did I put that trench coat?
Brilliant song, their best I think.
jim a fine return to form give us more of what your good at !
son of the rock
Great tune. I always thought he said 'chopping up my STUBBORN thoughts' -- not that that makes a lot more sense. Too bad E&BM never made it big here in the U.S. I always thought Bono was the poor man's Ian McCulloch and never understood why U2 got massive everywhere. Saw them at Coachella with my son last April and was disappointed that Mac was a complete prick to the fans. I had to put it out of my mind and focus on the memories. Still have this 12" gathering dust someplace...
I always thought it was 'stomping thoughts.' Playing live on TotP, which is impressive with some nice guitar work form Will. The painting hangs in the walker art gallery in Liverpool city centre btw.
I concur, cracking single and Fuel’s always been one of my fave b-sides. Saw them in Liverpool just before Christmas and was taken back 30 years, they were well back on form. Cheers, Sidders.
Yeah I love the Bunnymen. Will Sergeant should be up there with Johhny Marr or a close second. I based my hairstyle in the eighties on Macca and Robert Smith....sadly it's more Michael Stipe these days!
I saw them in concert in the 80s and it was an incredible show. I love BOL.
Saw them in the 80s, 90s and 00s. Quite frightening thought that they could soon become someone I'll have seen in four separate decades.
I have to agree with Mac - Greatest Band of All Time and Ocean Rain is the Greatest Album of All Time...that cheek out of the way, I have to agree with your classmate JC, there is a great deal going on in Mac's lyrics. There are themes of psychedelia, spirituality and devotion. I did a paper at Uni for a poetry course that looked at Mac lyrics as well as Richard Butler's from The Furs and Siouxsie/Severin's as well. I will admit, my professor graded me highly as not to seem like he wasn't with it probably...lol
