BRAND NEW YEAR....SAME OLD RUBBISH??

Some of the postings in 2011 might be vaguely familiar to readers of old. Its not that I'm going back and regurgitating entire past sections of TVV (not yet anyway), but simply that songs previously featured and commented on might well be rearing their heads again in the week and months ahead. Like today's offering which I know at some distant point in the past I've talked about.

But it came on the i-pod the other day on random and made me appreciate just how great a song it is. What I was astonished to realise when I dug it out from the CD shelf is that it is now more than 10 years old.

I can still recall my first exposure to Gorillaz. I was watching MTV2 and at the time it featured a little-known presenter called Zane Lowe who specialised in bringing you new tracks on a show late on, if memory serves me right, on Sunday evenings.

The promo for Tomorrow Comes Today was played, and right away I thought to myself 'that sounds like Damon Albarn.....'. But nothing was said at the end of the clip by the VJ making me think if I was simply imagining things. Remember this was pre-internet searches which meant all I could do was track down the single and see for myself. Which I did.

I played it and knew then that it was indeed the Blur frontman. But his name was nowhere to be seen on the release.....it was a total mystery as to what this was all about.

Of course the Gorillaz phenomena did go overground a few months later and has arguably gone from strenght to strength. I've become a big fan of Plastic Beach, the 2010 LP, although it was one that took a few listens to really grab my attention.....its a record that needs but deserves repeated listens to really appreciate how special it really is.

But anyway, back to the debut bit of music.

Released in November 2000, it contains four tracks and a copy of the video that I had seen on MTV2. It was a flop in that it failed to chart, but the lead song was released again as a single in its own right in February 2002 and reached #33.

It also features Rock The House which was also a later single, hitting #18 in October 2001 as well as the original version of Latin Simone with Damon on vocals (a different vocal by Ibrahim Ferrer would appear on the band's self-titled debut LP). The final track is one only made available on the debut EP

mp3 : Gorillaz - Tomorrow Comes Today
mp3 : Gorillaz - Rock The House
mp3 : Gorillaz - Latin Simone
mp3 : Gorillaz - 12D3

And here's the video.

Happy Listening. It really is a cracking debut with all four songs offering something to enjoy.....

Love Gorillaz, love them far more than I ever loved Blur. Feel Good Inc is probably my single of the century so far. Bold claim I know.

I'm going to post something by them myself I think now..
