BIGGER AND LONGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER

Sometimes, the 12" mix or version of a song ends up ruining it. Like here:-

mp3 : Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - My Bag (Dancing Mix)

The first single lifted from the 1987 LP Mainstream, the single stalled at a surprisingly low #46 in the UK singles charts and was an early indication perhaps that the band's big moments of glory were now in the past.

The dancing mix has dated appallingly. The drum sound particularly grates. and burying the guitar work in the chorus is another big mistake. The unaltered version was way superior and much better to dance to rather than the mix on the 12":-

But that was nothing compared to the crime perpetrated on the band's debut single with this b-side of the My Bag 12"

mp3 : Commotions Meet The Irresistible Force - Perfect Skin

I'm sure everyone who was out of their faces on drugs at the time thought it was a great idea but it really is beyond description. Fucking appalling. the guilty partner was Mixmaster Morris who has no doubt done released some great bits of music in his time.....but this isn't one of them.

Can the third and otherwise unreleased track in the 12" single save the day??:-

mp3 : Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Jesus Said

Sadly, the answer is no. I'm just grateful I only paid 50p for this in a charity shop a while back. Even then, I feel ripped off.

Hell's teeth! That Perfect Skin mix is horrific. And I say that as someone who has plenty of Mixmaster Morris stuff. Shocker. You should check out his mix of Coldcut's Autumn Leaves, it's sublime.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions have a place in my favourite listening collection...but that remix of Perfect Skin is the worst remix I've heard. A great song ruined by Mixmaster Morris.

Ah - I can't agree with you on this one Jim!

The My Bag 12" holds a special place in my heart. The Perfect Skin remix used to make me laugh - the whole "sexually enlightened by the age of ten" cut up being a particular highlight

I was probably being contrary - because the Cole hardcore detested it at the time - and it still seems to be annoying people more than 20 years later!

I'd forgotten this I'm ashamed to say. A single I really liked. I'm off to get my own 12" out.......

Mixmaster Morris has indeed released some great tracks of his own and remixes but I have to admit that this is not one of them. I suspect that there is a tongue planted firmly in a cheek here.

It is amazing what pish indie artists would let be released in their name in order to jump on the dance bandwagon.

I have always found Jesus Said a very fine song (although I have the 7" single - I don't know if the 12" is different). The song is included in the expanded edition of Rattlesnakes - apparently it was recorded not too after that album.

Any chance of reposting this, since the link seems to be dead? I'd love to hear the Perfect Skin travesty, and it might save me purchasing it on Discogs.com
