There have been spells in recent weeks where I have felt as far as TVV goes that I have lost what it takes to keep it going. But I think I'm through the worst of it.The one thing that has suffered however, is that what little free time I've had has been devoted to keeping the daily postings ticking over and I have hardly read any other blogs over the past 6 weeks. And there's a lot of great stuff out there.....a small selection of my personal favourites are listed on the right hand side, and I wholeheartedly recommend all of them if you can make the time. But my pre-New Year's resolution is to get reading once again....
Here's the 7" single version of the song that inspired today's title:-
mp3 : Prefab Sprout - Faron Young
The opener on the truly outstanding Steve McQueen LP originally released in the summer of 1985, it is a tune quite unlike any other recorded by the band - it bounces along at a fair old pace and while a homage of sorts to country and western music, it is a C&W tune that sounds as if it is being plated at 45rpms instead of 33 1/3rpms - but it works!!
Despite being utterly brilliant, Faron Young failed to impress the record buying public and it stalled at #74 in the UK singles chart, meaning not many folk got to hear this otherwise unreleased b-side:-
mp3 : Prefab Sprout - Silhouettes
A little bit Prefab Sprout by numbers, but still rather pleasant.
In 2005, Steve McQueen was re-mastered and re-released and a number of the tracks were given the solo acoustic treatment by Paddy McAloon, including this:-
mp3 : Prefab Sprout - Faron Young (acoustic)
Totally different from the original but equally wonderful.
And here's a wonderful live TV clip from the mid 80s:-
Happy Listening
** Sorry folks if I've caused a bit of panic!! I don't intend to quit....its just there have been some dark days this past few weeks where I lost a bit of enthusisasm.
I will continue to foist my ludicrious opinions on you all in the weeks and months ahead.....

Don't give up JC - what would we do without you?
(Faron Young's a favourite though I never heard that b-side, so thanks.)
Hi
Maybe we "readers" should become "commenters" and let you know what a joy your blog is. There are always treasures to find amongst your words and music. Please don't give up.
Thank you
Yeah don't you dare pack it in...

Yeah JC - sorry I don't leave as many comments as I should, even if it's just to say thanks.
But listen, what's (almost) unique about TVV? I come here every day for the sheer pleasure of reading your thoughts. Most of the stuff you post I've already got anyway - alas not on vinyl but who could afford that. Or even have the space to store it all.
Soometimes you inspire me to listen to teams I've forgotten about. Sometimes you post really interesting takes on familiar stuff (like The Smiths series). And sometimes you just cheer me up.
So thanks mate.
You ARE appreciated.
Keep at it fella- you're an inspiration. If the words don't come, just stick up the songs!
Thanks for the memory - John Peel playing this, but I seem to recall him not really praising the album too much. Maybe I'm mistaken.
Keep posting, I read it every day, thoroughly enjoy it.
All the best.
Keep going TVV - you are not alone. I look in every day and usually am glad that I have.....
TVV- Love the blog, please don't remove yourself from my daily "to do" list. There are lots of other great blogs but I feel like most of them are always looking for the next big thing and forgot how we got to where we are now. Not to say there isn't great new stuff but they way we consume music now is different then when that prefab sprout single came out...
God, JC, absolutely NOT!
We need you and love your blog just the way it is.
Yep, what everyone else said, JC!
Your blog constantly reminds me why I love music, and you articulate that love much better than I could. And like someone else stated, if you're not in the mood to articulate anything at all, let the music speak for itself.
I really enjoy your blog, so I'm happy to hear you got over your little 'moment. ;)
As a thanks, here is the full version of Silhouettes...

It's funny but I have found when I try to introduce people to Prefab Sprout, Faron Young is one of the tracks that seems to do the trick! It is a bit of perfect pop. The "acoustic" version just shows how versatile Paddy is!
Thanks for posting these. Always good to know a fellow Prefab fan. It inspired me to look for the song Donna Summer which I could only find on the vinyl ep of WLBD. I found it and posted it here:

Cheers for a great blog! I feel yr pain about lack of comments.
