RIP-OFF MERCHANTS

1992. A new single by Electronic. This is great news. I loved their debut from the previous year and was greatly looking forward to hearing the new songs. My mood is improved even more when I learn that just as with the debut single, Neil Tennant is providing the lead vocals.

I buy it on the day of release. By this time the record player is in storage along with the vinyl. So its the CD single that is purchased. The price label is still on it. It says £3.99.

It's only all these years later that I fully realise how disgracefully music lovers were treated back in those days. But the thing was, being such a fan I didn't notice and didn't really care. It was worth it for the such perfect pop. I wasn't all that fussed that of the four tracks which constituted the single - and which incidentally in the record company's mind justified a £4 price-tag as opposed to say £2 for a two-track - two of the others were remixes of the single and the other a remix of an old LP track.

In other words, I effectively paid £4 for one new song. Seems I wasn't alone though. The single climbed to #6 and gave Electronic their biggest chart hit.

Thankfully, things have changed for the better 18 years on. But don't ever be upset when you read about record labels bleating about falls in profit. They ripped us all off for far too long and never once said sorry. Disappointed? You bet......

mp3 : Electronic - Disappointed (7" mix) *
mp3 : Electronic - Disappointed (12" mix) **
mp3 : Electronic - Idiot Country Two
mp3 : Electronic - Disappointed (original mix) ***

It's an open act of defiance and it's aimed directly at you Mr Parlophone.

* additional production by Stephen Hague
** remixed by 808 State
*** original mix by Electronic

I loved this song when it came out. Thanks for the reminder. I have to agree though with the shamefulness of paying so much for a CD Single. Here in the states it would be listed as an ep and cost $8.00 US. Ridiculous.

Just re-read the ran and relised that at no point did I say that no matter the fact it was a shocking rip-off on the part of the record label, the song itself remains a work of art.

Much better than most things New Order managed to come up with post-Technique.

oh come on - i got this for £1.99 and loved it and always have.

I'm no lover of Emi for sure but I remember playing this on repeat for a week. If you want to talk aout rip offs I bought the two previous singles on impot at Andy's records for eight yes EIGHT quid a pop!

actually now having relistened I take that back even at 1.99 this was a rip off. Class single tho'

Good single. Cassingle (for the walkman) was only £1.99 and had all 4 tracks I think. Course it put the price up if you bought it on vinyl as well.

JC keep and eye out, just read some pretty scary stuff about Google wiping out entire music blogs using DMCA violations as the reason. Seems the four affected were all label/band supported as well as to the promo content they were posting... 2010 and Bloggergeddon may be upon us!

Thanks for this. I've never heard 'Idiot Country Two', having bought the US single, which contains a remix of 'Gangster' instead. 'Disappointed' still sounds fresh.

Never bought the cd singles if I could help it, if I really needed to have it, I knew that it would be in the bargain bin of the local Woolies as soon as it left the forty.

Around this time I was mainly buying 12" where you paid 4 quid for 4 mixes of the same track, however if said remix was by a certain A. Weatherall or any of his other noms de plume, you were getting your money's worth as they very rarely clocked in at less than 8 minutes.
