FROM UNDER THE COVERS (Parts 54,55,56 & 57)

Feeling a bit weary just now, so can't really think of much to type.

mp3 : Ash - Does Your Mother Know?

I don't think I put enough Ash on this blog. Cant promise that I'll do anything about it tho'. This cover of the Swedish phenomena's 1979 smash hit was made available on the b-side of Oh Yeah.

mp3 : The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - California Uber Alles

The Dead Kennedys are given an update and the hip-hop treatment on a track from the truly outstanding 1992 LP Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury.

mp3 : Edwyn Collins - 1977

An acoustic cover of an early song by The Clash. Made available on a record magazine give away a few years ago, as was this:-

mp3 : The National - Clampdown

I might have already featured some or indeed all of these songs before, but then again, most journalists/feature writers at some point in their lives re-hash previous columns. If you're bored today with these songs, I apologise.

Dead Kennedys surely? Or am I actually turning into my dad ...

I bought my first DKs record (Bedtime For Democracy) on reputation alone (not surprising, given that no radio played that sort of stuff in the mid 80s) and it really floored me. How could anyone play that fast and have such spot on politics? Up there with Public Enemy and B Bragg for political insight for me.

Pleasure as ever to read your blog.

I loved that first mini-album Ash did when they were about 8 or something... the one with Jack Names The Planets and Uncle Pat on it. I'd pretty much lost interest by the time A Life Less Ordinary came around (or just after it - that would have been the last Ash single I bought I think).

BTW, Smudge did a pretty good cover of Does Your Mother Know too. I think I may even have blogged it at some point.

I know I need more Ash. MORE ASH, I say! :-) Digging the cover, even if I can't stand the original.

Dead Kennedys were a staple of my early days, thankfully! They literally saved me from insanity as you can imagine. Well maybe not, but trust me, hahah ...oh fine, just email me and I'll tell ya the whole sordid tale xoxo

I listened to Edwyn's version of 1977 twice, just to be sure. It's just not right.

Why??? I can see him doing justice to Bankrobber however.

I suspect you do know, but in case y'all don't, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy were originally called The Beatnigs. I prefered that name, turth be told.

They changed the name, re-recorded 'Television: The Drug of the Nation' & became indie/punk hop cross over darlings for a year.

I did not know that. And I'm with you that The Beatnigs is a great name!
