THE CLASS OF '79 (Part 9)

This sounded really weird on first listen back in 1979. And 30 years on I still think it has a fair degree of weirdness.

But when I say that, I am praising not castigating the record as it's one that has aged magnificently.

mp3 : The B52's - Planet Claire

Ok, I know that it chunders along in much the same way as The Theme From Peter Gunn, but when I first heard Planet Claire, I had no idea of the existence of that bit of music....

It's one of those songs that I sort of dread coming up on random shuffle on the i-pod if I'm using public transport as its impossible to keep still while it plays. At the very minimum my head will move from side to side and my shoulders will start shaking, thus putting my fellow passengers in great fear that I'm about to suffer some sort of fit. And god forbid that it should ever come on when I'm half-drunk as I'm very likely to wail tunelessly in a dreadful impression of the organ sound...

Incidentally, the single flopped in the UK and if you want to get your hands on a copy of the picture disc (one that I used to own but sadly no longer do), there are a few kicking around on e-bay with £12 price tag.

Happy Listening.

"castigate" - lovely word. So much better than the lazy media use of "slam"

The hole in that pic disc is perfectly placed I think.

Oh the bus problem... yes, same here with the same song (and a few others). We are social rejects of the highest order, darling, xoxoox!

I think the passengers got off easy that Rock Lobster or 52 Girls didn't come up.

It's the equivalent of reading Bill Bryson...it's impossible to keep to yourself in public!
