The Sound Of Young Scotland.
That was the strapline of Postcard Records.
Short-lived it may have been, but what a legacy.
Orange Juice signed to Polydor while Aztec Camera went to Rough Trade where the great pop singles kept on coming.
Released in October 1982, this reached #42 in the UK charts. (I know I've already mentioned this single before on TVV but something this good is well worth re-visiting)
mp3 : Orange Juice - I Can't Help Myself
mp3 : Orange Juice - Tongues Begin To Wag
mp3 : Orange Juice - Barbecue
It's the 12" version made available along with the two tracks on the b-side, the first of which has a guest vocal from Paul Quinn.
Released in May 1983, this great piece of work somehow flopped, only reaching #64:-
mp3 : Aztec Camera - Walk Out To Winter
mp3 : Aztec Camera - Set The Killing Free
It's a radical reworking of one of the tracks on debut LP High Land, Hard Rain, one that sometimes I think is a better version while there are other times I prefer the original. The failure of this single to get any higher in the charts, despite a load of promotional work by Roddy and his band ,was one of the main reasons he jumped ship onto the major label of WEA not long after.
Happy Listening.

You know how there are songs in your all time favourite list that are always there and ones that change with time. Walk Out To Winter, the single version, has been there since I first heard it. I actually posted it myself on February 23rd last year!
I love the single version; it would probably be one of my desert island discs if you were to push me to make a list.
Love all these Orange Juice songs! Esp. "Can't Help Myself" :) thanks hun! xoox
Gorgeous stuff. Had my three ipods and Mac stolen in a break in fortnight ago and this week lost my job! So have not been around for a couple of weeks. I remember losing a bet at the time that Roddy's remixed single would go top 10! Remixed by the great Tony Mansfield. The man the pop gems that were World of Water and Living by Numbers as New Musik around 1980. You can see the slightly pop electronica logic that Roddy and Rough Trade must have arrived at in a bid to break into the charts. Always loved the fact he nicked Diana's 'Ain't No Mountain' for the intro on this. Boy wonder indeed. Thanks again for the post. stevie

Bugger I missed that OJ 12''. Somewhere I think I still have the tape of the THE ORANGE JUICE album as it had a whole side of 12'' mixes and extended versions. Would be so much easier if I could find it on the net but have never seen it around.
Did you get a chance to check out Jesse Rae?
