IT'S FRIDAY, I'M IN LOVE....WITH MORRISSEY (Part 7)

Now, this is just a hunch, but I reckon that in any poll of 1,000 fans asking for a list of their Top 10 favourite Morrissey singles, there will be at least 999 who include this. And the one who doesn't is a liar.

Released in June 1988, Everyday Is Like Sunday has proven to be one of the most enduring songs of the solo career, having being played on most of the solo tours, particularly those since the 2002 comeback. It's also the song that has had the best known cover versions over the years, with the likes of The Pretenders, 10,000 Maniacs and Colin Meloy of The Decemberists all having a stab.

The single went to #9 in the UK charts which is a hugely impressive achievement given that the song had been available on the LP Viva Hate for a few months beforehand. And while I imagine that many fans would have bought the single for the sake of keeping up the collection (that was certainly my reason at the time), the fact is that the three extra tracks provided on the b-side of the 12" single are as good as anything else Morrissey had released as a solo artist at that time in his career.

It was like a throwback to his early career with The Smiths when the release of a new single was every bit as eagerly anticipated for the b-sides as well as the ones you would see them perform on Top of The Pops.

mp3 : Morrissey - Sister I'm A Poet
mp3 : Morrissey - Disappointed
mp3 : Morrissey - Will Never Marry

Oh and the video proved to be reasonably popular, even if it did play up to the way Morrissey fans tended to be stereotyped...

Happy Listening.

How I look forward to these Friday posts, thank you... solid gold! For a long time, Sister I'm A Poet was my favourite solo Morrissey song...

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a favourite. Solid gold classic song... but amazingly, I don't think I've ever seen the video before. They should release a Moz video DVD, I bet I haven't seen half of them.

I'd be lying if I said it was a favourite. I like it but somehow, for all of the lyrical loveliness the song itself feels somehow... ordinary isn't the right word, but maybe 'mainstream' is. I think there are such astonishingly good things on Viva Hate, very Smithsy things like 'Maudlin Street' and 'Ordinary Boys' and wonderfully different things like 'Alsatian Cousin' (which I think might be my favourite Mozza solo track)but I think this is "just" a pop song, and that's usually a positive thing but I think we're allowed to want more than that from Morrissey, that is kind of the point of him.

Still my favourite Mozza solo track. Remember watching him do it live on Top Of the Pops. I should try looking on YOuTube for footage of that...

I can't believe thats the real video. Hard to spoof that kind of amateurish approach to making pop videos.

That's the extended play version of 'WIll Never Marry'. Hard to find, thanks for that!
