GOING FOR GOLD

It seems most of the world has its eyes firmly focused on an event centred around Beijing.

I love my sport - I'm totally addicted to watching all sorts of drama unfold before my eyes, particularly in football (world version and American versions alike), golf, cricket, baseball, basketball, ice hockey - hell I'll even watch darts for a laugh.

But the whole Olympics thing leaves me utterly unmoved. I think its all to do with the fact that so many media commentators, TV and print alike, get far too jingoistic with their " and he/she/they are going to win for (insert name of country here)". Oh, that and the 'lets all laugh at the competitor from the third world/under-developed nation' who is so bad at what they do, but 'he/she/they will remember this for the rest of their lives.'

Bah humbug.

If you want amazing sport of the highest quality, then this is what you should have watched.

mp3 : The Auteurs - Chinese Bakery
mp3 : Popup - Chinese Burns
mp3 : Johnny Thunder & The Heartbreakers - Chinese Rocks
mp3 : Japan - Visions of China
mp3 : China Drum - Wuthering Heights*

* yup, a cover of the Kate Bush song. It's rather appalling....

Happy Listening

Noooooooo! How can you call that cover appaling. That is one of my most fondly remembered songs from university. In a totally non ironic way. A group of us bonded over it and ended up requested it at the pub quiz every week. I also saw China Drum support someone way back in the day. Great fun but this cover was easily their best song.

But hey, even if you don't like it, at least you posted it. And for that I am grateful. I've searched for it for years with no success, so thanks for reuniting me with a memory.

What an amazing achivement from Padraig. He's just on a different level to the rest of them at the minute. First European to win the PGA since 1930 too! Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

Wot no T'Pau jc!

I think one is being a tad disingenuous in castigating all Olympic competitors in favour of men in yellow slacks and pink pullovers at the PGA Golf Champs.

You plawn crackers!

Those that have trained, sacrificed and dedicated much of their lives thus far in order to reach the pinnacle of their chosen sport (or achieve a lifetime best) leave much to admire - no matter if it's shot putt or shove 'apenny. Didn't I read somewhere that there are more drugs in golf than almost any other non-athletics sport. How does that work? Is yer man doing it just for the crack?

The Olympic drama has been there already jc - and there will be lots more over the next week or 2.

As for me, I loves it ... and consider the Womens Beach Volleyball a particular highlight.

that is a great cover you philistine, saw them supporting ash years ago and they were the better act that night, and that cover for me was the highlight of the night, sadly they went all dancey, called themselves the drum and disappeared up their own arse

Totally agree, that stuff sucks. Am in Australia, and yesterday I watched the male Columbian weightlifter who tried seven times to lift his bar, but he couldn't grip the bar properly and ended up having to pull out. Channel 7 made this whole montage about it, with 'witty' written commentary, ending with 'a gold medal just slipped through his fingers'. Pretty insulting, I thought.
