500 NOT OUT

A few months back, I asked readers if they would like to support a charitable cause - if you need your memory jogged, you can simply click here.

I'm delighted to say that a good number of you did come back and made donations, and in return I sent out some hand-crafted Orange Juice CDs. There was also a donation made direct to the charity by my young brother, and by the time I totalled everything up, Quarriers had become better off by £250.

I've kept this news back until the 500th posting at TVV as I thought it was somehow appropriate. It also allows me to post three more Orange Juice tracks that I wasn't able to make available at the time of the offer as I've only since got my hands on the 12" singles on which these particular versions appear:-

mp3 : Orange Juice - Bridge (Summer 83 version)
mp3 : Orange Juice - Flesh Of My Flesh (extended version)
mp3 : Orange Juice - Lean Period (extended version)

Those of you who bought a disc and made a contribution are welcome to download and keep these tracks - the rest of you should merely have a listen......

I thought I'd also mark today's momentous occasion with a couple of b-sides from recent singles, on the assumption that by now the sales will have slowed to a trickle, and thus I'm not depriving the artists of any income. But, if you do happen to be hearing these songs for the first time and like what comes out of your speakers, I'd urge you to make an effort to track down the vinyl either preferably via a good independent record store near where you like, or by mail order from the record companies. Details will come at the bottom of this post:-

mp3 : Edwyn Collins - Searching For The Truth (b-side to Home Again)
mp3 : Frightened Rabbit - Soon Go (b-side to Fast Blood)

Now....this Edwyn Collins song might not be the most stunning 1 and three-quarter minutes of his recording career....but it might be among the most important. It's a new song, recorded after his illness and while he's been on the comeback trail. It's one he's been playing live at gigs all year- and like the live versions, the one that's been committed to vinyl features the guitar talents of Roddy Frame, with Edwyn keeping himself to vocal duties.

The Frightened Rabbit track shows just how many good songs they have just now if this can be thrown away as a b-side.....

I'd like to thank ally from Dusty Sevens for the image I've used today - it is taken from a very rare promotional booklet that came with some early Orange Juice material on Postcard Records (so rare, I dont have an original copy).

Happy Listening

PS

If you want to get a hold of the Edwyn Collins single, it seems you have to get it via a shop. Here's a link to the record label with some info.

And here's how to buy the stuff from Frightened Rabbit.

Congratulations! In the fickle blogosphere, 500 posts is an impressive accomplishment. Your genuine love for music is always an inspiration.

Many thanks guys for all your kind words.....

I've actually spent a bit of time tonight randomly going through some of the old posts, and I'm convinced more than ever that what helps make TVV more enjoyable (for me certainly, and I'm guessing for many of you) is the quality and frequency of the comments from regulars and occasionals alike.

Very often, its the words of encouragement that help keep me going when I have days of doubt....

Well done! I hope you know there are a lot of us who look forward to your posts every day. Personally, I've not only picked up excellent new music based on your blog, but have learned a great deal about bands/performers I already loved. Thanks.
