45 45s AT 45 : NUMBER 34
I’m only going to say a few short words today.
This rundown would have had no credibility whatsoever if the Pet Shop Boys didn’t make an appearance.
No other band or act has made so many top-class singles during my 45 years on the planet as Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. I think it was 55 at the last count, including four #1s, and a further thirty-three that made the Top 20. You can’t argue with the facts.....this is a very special pop group.
And this a damn near perfect pop song that reached #1 back in 1988.
mp3 : Pet Shop Boys – Heart
The b-side is I Get Excited (You Get Excited Too), but I can’t provide that here as I only ever bought PSB albums….
And its got a great video too......
Oh and you know how I'm also always going on about great live acts - well, their show at the SECC in Glasgow back in 1991 was one of the best I've ever seen.

The Pet Shop Boys Discography compilation is one of those albums that's always within easy reach. Heart is a great song, but Dusty's ad libs over the end of What Have I Done To Deserve This or the entirety of Left To My Own Devices would probably have been my choices.
They've done other stuff that I like but that period from 1984 to 1991 was probably the most perfect pop of any of the synth bands.
it's just fabulous to get some classic gay disco in every home - smashing

They indeed are tremendous live, though when I saw them it was with the most boring gay crowd you can imagine. My wife and I were dancing and the butch types behind us were telling us to sit down.
You can get "I Get Excited" on the b-sides comp "Alternative" - highly recommended album.
"Alternative" is indeed a pretty decent album. Combines some of their more experimental tracks with some good pop songs. It sounds like what their "Best of" might be if they didn't have to worry about labels and sales and all that commercial aspect. Of course, had they gone this way we probably wouldn't know them for much more besides the music from The Clothes Show.
Personally, I feel their latest releases are pretty forgettable, but their work over the years has been outstanding. Good to see them represented here.
Incidentally, I started a music blog of my own. Yours in the BlogRoll.
Heart is a great track and a good video (Ian McKellan!) . It's a sin might well be my favourite track.
