45 45s AT 45 : NUMBER 23

Now you might not believe this, but it is true.

When I was typing out the words and thoughts to accompany the song that made #24 on this chart, I didn't know what it was that made #23.

But it turns out to be the song I had in my mind when I was talking about 30 years ago when I was wittering about scratchy guitars, a tune that made you leap around and sweat profusely while joining in on a chorus to die for and all in the space of something lasting less than 2mins 30 secs in length. (OK....the song is actually 2 mins 43 seconds in length)

Do I really need to say anything else?

mp3 : Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)?

mp3 : Buzzcocks - Just Lust

Some stats. The single was released in September 1978. That means it's almost 30 years of age!!!!! It was the band's biggest hit, reaching #12 in the charts.

I’m actually at a loss to work out how Ever Fallen In Love? is only at #23 in the rundown.

I suppose its because I think there are 22 singles better than it…..but even I’m having doubts.

Footage is over at The Video Villain.

It's funny isn't it, there's a whole lineage of band that The Buzzcocks provided a blueprint for. And yet for a long time they weren't considered important.

This is probably my favourite tune you've posted so far. Never ceases to thrill. :)

After seeing what rubbish the student union at the university had organised for Freshers week (some crappy night in a free-rental nightclub with Fun Lovin' Criminals not playing, but DJing), a friend and I decided to try to put together our own festival. We got quite far, worked out the logistics, calculated the profit margin given complete sell-out (which was near-enough certain - though a 60% sale would have seen us break even) and... the union refused, having near enough removed its entire budget for the event.

Ours would have been something to remember. Indeed, Buzzcocks were one band we had penciled in and had ready to sign on board.

I blame bureaucracy. I remain convinced that the reason we weren't given the budget to do what everyone outside of the union wanted - including the bar manager, who would have seen none of the profits (that would also have gone back into the union) from the drink sales - was because our Entertainments Officer wanted his name on the event and nobody else's. It was his baby and, as ugly and undesirable it might have been, he didn't want anybody else to take it away from him.

Shame.

It's not a shame.....its a bloody disgrace.

Hopefully some tune or other from the Top 22 will get you the same way.

They seem to get tarred with the pop punk brush, which is true - but they were also instrumental and moving the early punk momentum outside of London. The 80s and 90s Manchester scenes would have been completely different if The Buzzcocks hadn't booked those Sex Pistols gigs at the Lesser Free Trade Hall
