FANCY SOME ORANGE JUICE???

Dearest Reader,

Young Ed (well, he is 31 and I'm almost 45) over at the consistently excellent 17 Seconds recently put up a posting on Orange Juice in which he bemoaned the fact that it is almost impossible, without using e-bay or second-hand record shops, to get a hold of any of their stuff.
And that got me thinking...

I've got just about every track that Orange Juice ever released. Including one of 1,000 copies of the vinyl copy of Ostrich Churchyard with 'The World's First 10" Irritation Disc' which is basically a 18 plus minute chat between Edwyn and Alan Horne.

I've a whole bundle of flexidiscs and cassettes that came with various Polydor singles. I've all albums on CD and vinyl. Sadly, I don't own (and know that I never will) the debut Postcard single of Falling and Laughing - although I'm glad to say that I have it on a compilation CD released years later. I've also got my hands a few live tracks that other bloggers have previously posted - thanks Ally at Dusty 7s

And I would like to make this stuff available to TVV readers. For charity.

Watch this:-

Now the young man in the video is my godson Kevin.

And my idea is....if you would like your very own Orange Juice compilation CD, I'll put it together and post it to you. I'm going to charge £6 for every copy. I reckon it will cost about £1 for materials, postage and packaging, leaving £5 which I will donate to Quarriers.

All you need to do is send me an e-mail to thevinylvillain@hotmail.co.uk listing what songs or recordings you would like. I'll provide 60 minutes worth on each CD.

I've gone to the trouble of setting up a paypal account to make things as easy as possible - although I will accept cash or cheques from UK readers.

I know this is all highly unusual, not to mention completely illegal as I do not own the copyright to any of the songs. But I can't think of any other way for folk to get a hold of most of these tracks - and it is all for a very good cause.

Now of course I have no idea if this will prove popular or not. I may end up with next to no requests - in fact I might end up with nothing at all. But its up to you....

And in the meantime, as I'm not wanting this particular post to lose its place, I'll not be putting anything else up on TVV for the next week. Normal service will not be resumed until Monday 10th March.

I'd also be grateful if you could use your own blogs to highlight this.

mp3 : Orange Juice - Felicity (Radio One Session, January 1981)

So...send me the e-mail listing the tracks you want. Also, let me know how you intend to pay. If its paypal, I'll issue you with an invoice. Once I get payment through, I'll get to work.

Thank You.

PS : Tuesday 4th March at 1.20am

Just got back from seeing Neil Young in Edinburgh this evening and am overwhelmed with comments and e-mails on this. Thanks to everyone of you who have taken the trouble to get in touch. I am planning to get started on the orders in the next 24 hours - in the meantime, get those cheques posted or paypal arrangements sorted.

But I really want to say a really special thanks to my young brother Stevie over in Florida who has said that although he's not a big Orange Juice fan and doesn't want any CDs, he's donating £50 to the campaign - £25 on behalf of each of his two kids - Hannah and Liam. I'm off to bed with a huge grin on my face and a wee tear in my eye.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I have all the Orange Juice I can use, but consider yourself loved and this post linked. I'm sure too, if you ask nicely, Ed'd pull his freebies and direct folks over here instead??

davy H and Villain Ed could certainly be persuaded to do something of the sort and link to you and pull the freebies.

As a gesture of solidarity I will remove the links in twenty four hours and will also buy two CDs worth from you, think you still have my snail mail address.

And glad to have got you thinking...

You might want to check the link to 17 Seconds there...

Right....new post going up at my place tonight highlighting this venture.

Once I've had a proper scan through the tracks listed I'll let you know what I'd like (and I promise not to tell Alan Horne).

my son Isaac is in currently in hospital. He has a rare genetic disease, various disabilities and learning difficulties. He now has meningitis, has had a stroke and was in a coma for 3 days. We've been in hospital for 2 weeks and my opportunites to get to a computer are obviously limited, but this is a great idea and i love Orange Juice. Please don't shut up shop before I get to order.

Good man. Would it be OK if spread the word on this to folk in Singapore who might gagging for something like this? I remember a casual mention of my selling some vinyl prompted emails from strangers after my Orange Juice.

Great idea.

Advertised your generous offer on MySpace. Hope it gets some feedback.

Monday lunchtime update - first couple of orders have arrived.

One from a member of the band Scottish Polis Inspectors (and that kind of freaked me out....) and the second from a wonderful Canadian.

Just give me yer fookin' money

Matthew said...

Hiya JC, what an excellent idea. Can I order two please: one accessible popular opinion-based Best Of and then a personal, JC-based Best Of Everything Else.

Great idea! Really great! I've posted a wee bit about it on Plain Or Pan? and I'll certainly take you up on the offer of a CD once I have studied your list to find out what I need to fill the gaps in my Orange Juice collection. Good luck with the project.

OK VV, that's me paid up. Many thanks...

Once again thanks to all of you who have spread the word - it is certainly working with folk saying they would like to get a hold of a CD having been directed to TVV by one or other of you.

Friends really are electric....

Mine arrived this morning. Perfect and well packaged, nice artwork too! My estimate is that it'll be safe on my iPod in about ten minutes flat. Many thanks VV, and to those as yet undecided... GET BUYING! :-)

I was lucky enough to see Edwyn Collins play in Manchester recently. Happily he seems to be recovering (albeit slowly) from his terrible brain haemorrhage.

I spoke to his wife Grace at the gig and she was certain that the love from his fans and the ongoing affection for his music was helping with his recovery.

So, please, let's keep it up. The world needs more musicians with the strength and talent of Edwyn Collins.
