45 45s at 45 : THE CONCEPT

On June 18th 2008, I will turn 45 years of age. That’s in just under three months time.

One of my all time heroes, Bill Drummond, marked his 45th Birthday with the writing of a book that was partly biographical, partly philosophical but completely genius.

I’d love to have the talent to do something similar, but instead I’ve decided that I’ll make do by saying a few words on 45 of my all-time favourite 45rpm records.

Actually, that previous sentence is totally misleading. In fact it could even be regarded in the same light as Heather Mills’ evidence in her divorce case – ‘inconsistent, inaccurate and less than candid.’

Here’s why…..

(1) Not all of the songs on the list were released on bits of plastic that spun around your turntable at 45 revolutions per minute.

(2) The list is not my 45 all time favourite singles as I’ve decided to restrict each act/performer to one entry. Otherwise it would have been a chart dominated by a handful of bands such as The Jam, New Order, Orange Juice and The Smiths.

(3) What consists of a list at this particular moment in time could fluctuate on a daily basis. I reckon I’m firm on my all time Top 10…..but what one day might, for example, be sitting at #24, could the very next jump up to #13 or drop down to #33. And at the lower end of the list, some songs which bubbled under may find themselves sneaking in at the expense of something sitting proudly in the 40s.

(4) The 45 in question had to have been bought by me (or on the parent album as I was sometimes skint) at the time of release – this means that stuff that I grew to love years after it first came out are controversially disqualified.

So, over the coming weeks, I’m going to have a regular series counting down some great singles – and I’m going to also post the b-side as well (or Tracks, 2, 3 and 4 in the case of it being a CD single).

I’m in no doubt that what will gradually be revealed will irritate almost all of you as something you think should appear high up the chart suddenly makes an appearance in the high 30s. Or you’ll be hacked off when I choose a song that you’ll consider can never be regarded as the best 45 he/she/they ever released. Or worst of all, when a band or performer who you would have in your Top 5 doesn’t appear in the list at all…..

To give you an idea of how long this particular exercise took, I started off with a list of almost 300 names. For most of them, it was relatively simple enough to find my one favourite single that they had recorded. For others it was a really tough task. Over the course of a couple of weeks, I whittled it down. Once I was below 100 songs, it became almost impossible.

I hope that this will prove to be a series you find enjoyable enough, and please feel free to come on board with your comments, views and observations and savage attacks on my taste at any point in time. The series is going to begin in earnest on Easter Monday, but in the meantime, here, in artistic alphabetical order, are the songs that came in at Nos. 46-50…

mp3 : Billy Bragg – Levi Stubbs' Tears
mp3 : Morrissey – November Spawned A Monster
mp3 : REM - Electrolite
mp3 : Stereolab – Ping Pong
mp3 : Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun

See….I told you it wasn’t an easy task.

I can't quite decide whether 45 45s at 45 is a symptom of sad pea-fart midlife crisis, an overwraught, self-indulgent example of trainspotter-ism at it's finest or something else entirely.

Either way I'm hooked. :) although count me out of the sequel (presumably 78 78s at 78)

that's a bloody good way to start any birthday obsessiveness - count me in

As ever, nice one. But does that mean that Bill and REM don't make the 45. That is both harsh and surprising.

I feel like I'm waiting for Peelie's Festive 50. A couple of big faves of mine in that little 5 today; Levi Stubb's Tear's has one of the best intros ever. You just know when Billy boy wrote that he sat there with a big smile on his face afterwards!

I'm also (mildly) annoyed. Simon's top 40 at 40 is already planned for next year...... :)

Great idea! I love the Bill Drummond book, especially the chapter where he describes his idea for the Scotland World Cup 98 single.

Just so I'm clear - is it Billy Bragg or Violent Femmes that's number 50?

Talk about being put under pressure - Thanks a bunch Simon!

I would never had dreamed of what I was doing being compared to a Festive Fifty run-down. But I need to point out that Mr Peel actually had the advantage of allowing bands to have more than one entry....

Phil - The first five tracks I've posted are not in anything other than alphabetical order - in one way it was just to illustrate the quality of songs that missed out and also to show just how difficult this whole task had been.

Mrs V knows what's on the list, and she shares JtK's thoughts that it is very harsh on Billy Bragg and REM in particular to have missed out. And while she doesn't agree with everything I've chosen, she can see how tough choices had to be made (incidentally JtK....Kylie Minogue missed out as well!!)

Chris - I'd like to think the one thing its not is a midlife crisis...but its probably everything else you mention

Ally - it means a lot if I've got you interested.

I have to mention that the 45 will be appearing in among other postings. The plan is to countdown to No.1 on the actual birthday - I'm starting this early partly as the TVV will close down in mid-May while I'm on holiday..

Mr Clark, you bring a degree of thought, toil and general preparedness to this blogging lark which those of us who throw it all together at the last minute whilst under the influence of alcohol can
only look upon in wonder x

I love the self-imposed conditons at 1-4. Talk about making life difficult for yourself. Twopalmtrees is right, this is a fine example of trainspotterism (says the man with an even more anal alphablog!). And none the worse for it. Looking forward to it but distraught that REM aren't in the top 45...pffft.

Spiffing idea! I look forward to challenging your esteemed choices as we slide into summer.
I am 45 now and can barely formulate a fish finger sandwich - let alone my thoughts in such a tidy cushion-plumping fashion.
1 x Jam song eh! Hard enough in itself.

Good on yer.

Good luck with this. I look forward to seeing how it turns out. I have considered similar high concept blogging but I know I would never get past the first few posts.

Reminiscent of the great Peter Powell famous for being the most overly sincere radio DJ ever, and breaking in Anthea Turner, who would play five '45s' at 5.45 which at the time seemed the cleverest idea ever. Of course that was before DLT came up with the inspired idea of darts on the radio. Oh the golden days of broadcasting...

I remember being told years ago of a version of Levi Stubb's Tears performed by The Redskins which unbelievably knocked the spots off the original. At the time I searched for it and failed and I still haven't heard it. If its tucked in the depths of your vinyl collection by any chance can you post it please?

Oh and happy birthday in advance.

Mike

Excellent - really looking forward to the countdown... even if Billy and Moz have already missed out!

Ha - that reminds me ... Darts on the radio - that's commentary on a real darts pub match (not the 'quack quack oops' quiz)- was the highlight of Falkland Islands Radio in the early 80s. Live from Stanley, "And he's still going for double 1". God how we drank - to escape the cold and the penguins and the banal backwardsness of it all.

Hmmm... I suspect that I will find here a lot of 45s that in some way have also marked my life. What a great idea, JC! :)

If those songs are on the lower end of the list, I can't wait to see what gets the highest spots.

Of course, I shall always be ready to take up the offer of savagely attacking your taste! I could never refuse something so exciting.
