THIS IS VERY MUCH A LOVED SONG
Yet another of the vinyl treasures that I found in Toronto.
A mint-condition copy of the 12" of This Is Not A Love Song by P.I.L. For a bargain $10.
But I refuse to believe that the song dates back to 1983. That's nearly 25 years ago for fuck sake. I'm not ready to accept that I'm getting that old that quickly. Time for the botox and liposuction.
I've long owned a copy of this record, but (a) I wore it out through constant playing, and (b) the whiter-than white sleeve was grubby and torn. I'm delighted to have at long last replaced it.
There are four songs on this magnificent piece of plastic - including an original and remix version of the single.
The remix is quite different from the original. Wobble's bass lines and Lydon's vocals are identical but the keyboards are far more prominent while the guitar is further back in the mix.
It's probably a bit more poppy than the actual single, and while it's pretty impressive in its own right, it just doesn't have the same impact as what remains one of my all time favourite records.
A few years later, P.I.L. released a greatest hits compilation, which included yet a further remix of TINALS - and one that was completely different. A re-recorded vocal and a horn section that I just wan't prepared for at the time. For years it was a version that I hated, but I have grown more fond of it in recent times. You can make your own minds up:-
mp3 : P.I.L. - This Is Not A Love Song (original 12" version)
mp3 : P.I.L. - This Is Not A Love Song (re-mixed version)
mp3 : P.I.L. - This Is Not A Love Song (re-recorded version)
Once more, I'm off to the beach to top up the tan. Happy Sundays.

TVV,
Excellent choice. This was a favourite from my DJ days. The phat beat (can I use hip-hop terms in a bastion of indie-dom such as this?!) and bass throb made it ideal for mixing. With a little technical sleight of hand, you could slip it in over some pounding techno and then watch the dancefloor erupt. The young party heads loved the punk attitude while the old lags (no offence) got all misty eyed as a past master received some future shock.
Not that 'Love Song' needed that much dusting down - it sounded utterly fresh and straight off the rack, shining a fairly harsh light on some of the post post punk pretenders who were currying favour not so long ago.
From memory it was the original 12" version that got played out, but I'm not so that it's so hard to find copies, even ones in mint condition. I picked up a couple from the Cavern in Aberdeen for nothing more than the price of a satisfying pub lunch. I was intending to learn a turntable cut up, but unfortunately Grandmaster Flash I aint. Still if any of the vinyl fiends who patrol these pages make it as far as the cold, cold north (Glasgow is a breeze by comparison) then you'd be foolhardy in the extreme not to make time for the Cavern. It's teeming with treasure from the last fifty to sixty years and the staff are musical anoraks of the highest order. They may even have a web presence by now.
PS Be very wary of using DC Thomson branding, TVV - they seem a bit dopey, but they'll fight to the death for every last penny they believe to be theirs!
Weird. I was playing this just yesterday along with Flowers Of Romance, the first song I can clearly recall my mother asking me to turn off rather than just down a bit. Somehow she even put up with Friggin' In The Riggin', God alone knows how, but FoR was too much.
The horn version is one I just can't abide and I've dumped it off my Greatest Hits... So Far on my iPod and replaced it with the original and now I can also add this poppier remix to the end too. Thanks VV.
