CIAO....FOR NOW

So that's me off to Milano with Mrs Villain for a few days.....I won't be back in blog-land till next Monday.

Here's the song I most associate with Italia, in all its extended glory of almost 8 minutes:-

mp3 : Pop Will Eat Itself - Touched By The Hand of Cicciolina (Extra Time Mix)

PWEI were far more successful than my memory told me. I had always thought of them as a sort of cult act who deserved more success than they ever achieved. But doing a little bit of research shows up that twelve of their singles made the UK Top 50, with the fabulous Get The Girl, Kill The Baddies going Top 10 in 1993.

Today's offering was released in 1990 just before the World Cup that was held that year in Italy. I love how the cover has the flags of all 16 finalists around a football, and the fact the record is described as a 30cm single and not a 12" single as a nod to Europeanism.

The official song for the England World Cup squad that year was World In Motion by New Order, while the other big hit was the operatic tune that BBC-TV used for its coverage, Nessun Dorma sung by Luciano Pavarotti.

All in all, a good World Cup for music. Such a pity the tournament itself is widely regarded as the worst in the history of the 22 that have been played since 1930......

And here's today's offering from the vaults which are piece-by-piece being rebuilt after the debacle of ezarchive:-

mp3 : New Order - Age of Consent

World Cup 1990 was all about university finals and those penalties. To be honest I was still in hopelessly confused 80s lefty mode and was pleased to see England go out. 'Cause of the empire and everything, y'know.

Ah PWEI! Cicciolina and Karmadrome were always my favourites. Though, I prefer Cicciolina (Incredi-Bull Mix) to the one you have posted.

As for the mighty New Order, World In Motion (Carabineri Mix), mixed by Weatherall, was actually a pretty cool tune.

"1990 World Cup widely regarded as the worst in the history of the 22 ..." I beg to differ.

Um, I once sang 'Three Lions' (first version) on karaoke with Suggs from Madness.

Can I be an honorary football fan?

Have a lovely trip! Watch out fer da glass!

Oh my, PWEI! I lurved them in their grebo incarnation (though the latent sexism did trouble me), and also thoroughly enjoyed their dancier evolution. "Def Con One" rocks!!

Enjoy Milan - when I lived/worked in London, I made several business trips there. My last one coincided with a minor, yet most noticeable and disconcerting earthquake...

Dearest Elizabeth: Talk about stories - karaoke with Suggs?!?? That rock as well...

anyway, unable to go to Arcade Fire, which is a shame as I am sure it will be fantatsic.

Hope Italy was great and thanks for putting a link to 17seconds!

Buon Giorno!!!

Made it back in one piece from a hectic four nights in Milan.

Jeff - it was very pleasant weather over there - sunshine and the mid-50s, so not quite as cold as Chicago. On a sporting front...I'm sorry to say that I'm rooting for the Colts against your Bears next weekend.

I didn't get to a game in Milan as I had to be at the airport just 45 mins after kick-off.

For info. my favourite Italian team is Fiorentina - I actually can't stand AC Milan (its a political thing...) Why Fiorentina?? They were the first Italian team I saw in the flesh away back in 1969 when my dad took me to see them play a European tie here in Glasgow. That and the nice unusual purple strips.

Elizabeth - I'm soooo with FiL re the Suggs karaoke story. Is there a recording of it anywhere?? If so, please, please please share it with us.....

Is there any end to your talents???

Ctelblog.

I beg to differ. The 1990 World Cup was dogged by dour matches and a lack of goals, combined with cynical defending. Sure, a couple of exciting shoot-outs made for a bit of fun, but overall it was dreary.

Crash/Dr T

Confused 80s lefty mode. I remember that (cue Prefab Sprout song anyone??)

But working in a political environment knocked that out of me....I'm too much of a pragmatist these days I'm sorry (and a little ashamed) to say.

Ed

Thought it nice to ask. The link to 17 seconds is there with all the others as I enjoy reading your blog...and also to prove I don't have anything against folk from Edinburgh.

Arrivederci
